Following on from the success a couple of years ago of the Reduced Lord of the Rings Taruithorn tonight tried to write a couple of other "reduced" Tolkien works. While most of the society worked on the Reduced Hobbit (whose script, I have no doubt, will appear online in a few months/years), a couple of us decided to try to write the Lay of Leithian in haiku form (admittedly in 6-8-6). Here is the result; we hope you like it.

I
A king there was of old,
A daughter had he Lúthien,
Many marvels were begun.

II
"Ha! Beren comes too late."
And cursed the name of Morgoth thrice,
Borders of the faëry land.

III
Dairon's flute sudden stops,
Beren stood still bound enchanted,
Such love and longing filled.

IV
"Bring me one Silmaril."
"For little price do elven-kings,
Their daughters sell - thy will."

V
Lúthien in prison,
Now long and longer grew her hair,
Down ropéd hair she swung.

VI
Fëanor and his sons swore,
Then Felagund in wonder heard,
"Fëanor's sons would slay thee."

VII
Nereb and Dungalef!
Thû's chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
None would yield, none would tell.

VIII
O! Huan, swiftest hound,
Curufin looked with hot desire,
"To Nor'n perils, thou and I."

IX
"Farewell!" Thus died the king,
Vanquished betrayed Thû's master's trust,
She found his arms and swooned.

X
"My word I must achieve."
Beren did Curufin release,
"Pride and fate make me go."

XI
His blade he lifted high,
Thus back to him came Lûthien,
Their gracious forms forsook.

XII
Carcharoth sleepless waits,
Cleaving through night to dawn she sprang,
"Sleep, O! unhappy thrall."

XIII
A mazy-wingéd dance,
His crown there rolled upon the ground,
A Silmaril he clasped.

XIV
Defenceless to defend,
Tinúviel until the end -
The fangs of Carcharoth.

Appendix - Fingolfin's battle with Morgoth
His hopeless challenge cried,
"Come forth, O monstrous craven lord."
One last despairing stroke.

Nice.

Haiku always makes me wonder why people stop there when creating ridiculously challenging tasks for themselves. You couldn't do haiku AND have the first letter of every line spell something in elvish? Peasants... []

It's a "Poe" excuse! []

How's this:

'Twas Beren, and the Silmarils,
Did shine and twinkle in the crown,
All flimsy were the werewolves,
And the Morgoth, reknown.

'Beware the Morgul-lord, my son,
the tongue that lies, the eyes that dim!
Beware the Carcharoth wolf and shun,
the furmious Thangorodrim!'

He took his Luthien in hand,
Through halls of iron and darkling door,
So she danced before the manxome foe,
and put him all a-snore.

One two! One two! And through and through,
the Angrist-knife went snicker-snack!
The wolf devoured the Silmaril,
but Huan got it back.

'And hath thou found the Silmaril?
Come to my arms, you little snort!
Now you may have my daughter's hand,
(I see that you're one short.)'

'Twas Beren, and the Silmarils,
Did shine and twinkle in the crown,
All flimsy were the werewolves,
And the Morgoth, reknown.

The grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.

That is wonderful, Sarah. Mome graths --> Morgoth = inspired.
It didn't quite fit as well as borogroves = werewolves, but then poets have licenses for a reason. Also I couldn't find any Elvish words for "gyre and gimble..." or at least I was too lazy to look. []
