It would GREATLY help me (and possibly others) if anyone could post accurate desciptions of the peoples and/or characters of Middle Earth (for example Fëanor, Turgon, the Sindar) preferably the ones not included in the PJ's movie, but could still either be in or mentioned (ie. Mirkwood Elves, Erkenbrand) in it. In addition, I would also like your input on what you imagined them as (quotes are what I really need ) .
Why?: I play a game in which miniatures are used to play battles in ME. Here's the link. I plan on making these miniatures along with rules to play with.
Some that I DON'T need are:
Knights of Dol Amroth Glorfindel The Dúnedain Rangers Barrow Wights Tom Bombadil and Goldberry The Sons of Elrond Radaghast the Brown
-Thanks!
EDIT: I would like to say that I am changing the thread to more of a place where people share quotes AND interpretations. I will make drawings periodically, but I don't think I will discuss the models here (it seems greedy and is probably in the wrong place).
quote:Amid them strode a man tall and strong. His shield was red. As he came to the valley's brink, he set to his lips a great black horn and blew a ringing blast.
He was an older man at the time of the War of the Ring (He was the uncle of Dunhere - Lord of Harrowdale) - maybe in the fourties. I personally always pictured him as semi-long dark-haired, with a stern face.

Not blonde-haired? I can picture him almost perfectly- except for the hair. What kind of armor do you think he would have? I would think he would have substantial armor(red as well as shield?). Would he have a helmet too?

Well - all the rest is up to you. Since I don't think there is any other description of Erkenbrand. I know Rohirrim are famed for their blonde hair. But somehow I always pictured Erkenbrand dark-haired - perhaps his name.

I see him with a helm that has bits of red on it, though the helm in and of itself is more of the color of steel. I see him with blond hair too. Like the helm, I think there would be red on his armor, but his armor would not be red, if you take my meaning.

You asked about his wargear. In the books, the Eorlings are described as being clad in knee-length hauberks of maille, with helms featuring horsehair plumes, and wielding shields, spears, swords, and bows. To me, it sounds very much like the gear of the 11th century Normans, English, or "Vikings".

There are some hints in his name that relates to his 'hair', from the Shibboleth. Regardless of the name's roots, CT states:
quote:In the case of Fingon it was suitable; he wore his long dark hair in great plaits braided with gold.
At the time of his death, from the Silm:
quote:Then Gothmog hewed him with his black axe, and a white flame sprang up from the helm of Fingon as it was cloven. Thus fell the High King of the Noldor; and they beat him into the dust with their maces, and his banner blue and silver, they trod into the mire of his blood.
Perhaps his helm and armor were arrayed of blue.
He had a bow (From rescue of Maedhros & Horseriding Archers against Glaurung). Certainly had a sword (Cut Maedhros' hand & Battle of the Unnumbered tears)

Wow...thanks... I'll draw up some sketches. I was going to give Erkenbrand an axe, but I guess I should just give him a spear...no...wait...
I'll give him a black horn in his right hand...a cape/robe of some sort...a spear either in the ground or on his back...and then a red shield also on his back. I'll convert him from this:
I might either have him without a helmet, or with one more masked at the eyes.
Hmm...for Fingon, I'll somehow incorporate his father's symbol ... find a single or double-edged longsword, a bow (black or white, probably white)...I don't know what to do for the helm...and there are several models I can use to convert him. But how much armor? Either I use a model that has a lot of armor, or I sculpt some on one that doesn't have much...
C'mon you guys! I know there are many of you that can contribute! There are TONS of chararters/peoples that you know descriptions for!

quote:Now Turgon himself would appear, 'tallest of all the Children of the World, save Thingol', with a white and gold sword in a ruel-bone (ivory) sheath...
A bit about the Gondolindrim, from the Silm:
quote:...and the Gondolindrim were strong and clad in mail, and their ranks shone like a river of steel in the sun.
Turgon's House was adorned of the Banner of Fingolfin. His daughter, Idril, was of Golden hair. Perhaps he had blond hair.

I don't like the idea of a 'cape/robe'. I would put the spear & shield on his back, a sword in hand, and the horn in the other. Surely Erken had an horse, but at the Helm's Deep, he came as footman with the other troops - I'm not sure he would have charged with a spear lest he threw it. Anyway - to clarify :
quote:Behind him, hastening down the long slopes, were a thousand men on foot; their swords were in their hands.

On Erkenbrand, I was a bit skeptical about the robe thing (a small one); I wanted to be able to differentiate the models...
So, anyways, I finished the sketch of Fingon, scanned it in, and edited it on the computer. I have yet to color it, so when it's completely done (the drawing), it'll be posted in the Artist's Inn. Here it is:

Just thought I'd venture to say that I wish I could convert and paint models! My family has tons of models, plus odds and ends, lying around the house but I have no idea how to use them. I encourage you in your great endeavor. *bows*

quote:...and Tuor grew up among them; and he was fair of face, and golden-haired after the manner of his father's kin, and he became strong and tall and valiant...
quote:Then he took the harp which he bore ever with him, being skilled in playing upon its strings...
quote:...where it is said that in Gondolin Tuor carried an axe rather than a sword, and that he named it in the speech of the people of Gondolin Dramborleg. In a list of names accompanying the tale Dramborleg is translated 'Thudder-Sharp': 'the axe of Tuor that smote both a heavy dint as of a club and cleft as a sword'.
If however, you want to depict him when he wore the arms prepared by Turgon in Nevrast (All of which he probably put aside when he lived in Gondolin). Here it is:
quote:Then Tuor marvelling saw that on the wall behind the throne there hung a shield and a great hauberk, and a helm and a long sword in sheath. The hauberk shone as it were wrought of silver untarnished, and the sunbeam gilded it with sparks of gold. But the shield was of a shape strange to Tuor's eyes, for it was long and tapering; and its field was blue, in the midst of which was wrought an emblem of a white swan's wing... ...And he lifted down the shield and found it light and wieldy beyond his guess; for it was wrought, it seemed, of wood, but overlaid by the craft of the elven-smiths with plates of metal, strong yet thin as foil, whereby it had been preserved from worn and weather.
Then Tuor arrayed himself in the hauberk, and set the helm upon his head, and he girt himself with the sword; black were sheath and belt with clasps of silver.

I'll start work on Tuor's sketch this weekend, and I'm almost done "colorizing" it. His gear in Nevrast is much more descriptive, but I wonder, would that be what he would normally wear to battle? And, some more I would like are basic foot troops and especially elves of Mirkwood/Thranduil. Even some evil creatures (besides orcs, goblins, ringwraiths and balrogs).

quote: There were many people there, elvish-looking folk, all dressed in green and brown...
The Fellowship of the Ring also describes Legolas as:
quote: a strange Elf clad in green and brown...
so they apparently wear those colours a lot.
More from the Hobbit:
quote: at the head of a long line of feasters sat a woodland king with a crown of leaves upon his golden hair...
quote: Their gleaming hair was twined with flowers; green and white gems glinted on their collars and their belts; and their faces and their songs were filled with mirth.
quote: They dwelt most often by the edges of the woods, from which they could escape at times to hunt, or to ride and run over the open lands by moonlight or starlight
quote: In a great hall sat the Elvenking on a chair of carven wood. On his head was a crown of berries and red leaves, for the autumn was come again. In the spring he wore a crown of woodland flowers. In his hand he held a carven staff of oak.
from UT:
quote: compared with the Elves of Doriath his [Thranduil's] Silvan folk were rude and rustic
quote: The Silvan Elves were hardy and valiant, but ill-equipped with armour or weapons in comparison with the Eldar of the West
According to the chapter ‘The History of Eriol or Ælfwine and the End of the Tales’ in HoMe II: The Book of Lost Tales Part II, Tolkien wrote in a wrathful comment on a ‘pretty’ or ‘ladylike’ pictorial rendering of Legolas:
quote:He was tall as a young tree, lithe, immensely strong, able swiftly to draw a great war-bow and shoot down a Nazgûl, endowed with the tremendous vitality of Elvish bodies, so hard and resistant to hurt that he went only in light shoes over rock or through snow, the most tireless of all the Fellowship.

It's been nearly a year and I am ashamed of leaving this thread. Of course once school started, I didn't have much time for anything. I scanned in a picture of Tuor, with armament from Nevrast. The description can be found in Unfinished Tales in the chapter titled "Of Tuor and His Coming To Gondolin." I'm going to start an Elfwood site soon, but i need to make more drawings . Again, I am very sorry, and I this drawing can make amends.
Also I would like to say that I am changing the thread to more of a place where people share quotes AND interpretations. I will make drawings periodically, but I don't think I will discuss the models here (it seems greedy and is probably in the wrong place).
