As Thorin mentioned in another thread,
quote:
You know, we need a thread somewhere with links to all the maps in it. I've thought about that for a long time. We've got links to maps scattered all over the place, and it would be nice if they were all collected in one spot.
So here's my attempt to complete the task.
I've tried to format a layout that I found to be logical. But as some may doubt my logic any ideas to improve the layout of the index would be appreciated []
If I've missed out any maps from the forums please post the link here and I will add them to the index.
Some of the maps may take a few minutes to download. This is because they may be of a high quality image, large format or both. Please be patient, the wait will be worth it.

Cheers Ear, that was the map []
I had already rediscovered it elsewhere. As the index grows I will include it at the appropiate time.
As an update for those interested I have sourced many, many maps but will only be putting up links of the best.
I will include at some point links to other sites where more maps and atlases can be veiwed.

Would you mind changing the links that point to an image in a thread to point to the actual image?

Example: Dorwinion, Location of

It would be more organized if all links pointed to an outside image. If you want to add a list of links that have interesting map discussions, do so but keep it seperate from the images.

If you do happen to collect a group of the best links to Middle-earth sites, I'll make a Map category on the Links page and add them there.

Hello []
The list of links in my opening post has been considerably increased for your enjoyment []
I would like to thank Herendil for pointing me in the right direction to most of links for the new additions, thank you [] I have but only added these into the index where I saw fit.
I have also taken the time to remove or replace any bad links so now there shouldn't be any left [] I will check all of the links on a regular basis or as time allows.

It looks like the Tolkien Estate lawyers are busy at the moment and some of the well known ME map sites have had to close down due to copyrights []
Maybe they'll get around it somehow and reopen.

Indeed! And some of the best of maps were at those sites too. I've yet to find any of the various maps on Google that those sites had.

A lot of the maps simply say hosted by Tripod and I do not see a map. Is this something I need to join or are these maps no longer available?

Thanks

They have been removed one by one as the Tolkien Estate lawyers track people down.... I hate Tripod/Lycos/etc. places as they bombard your computer with spyware and trojans. My Trend Officescan and McAfee are always pinching bugs from Tripod sites.

Sad news indeed.

Her atlas was always my favorite non-Tolkien Tolkien book. She really helped me visualize his world and only I hope I can leave a body of work as inspiring. Some may have dismissed it at 'merely' fantasy, but her work had a professionalism and a scholarly aura that commanded respect. What else can I say.

Absolutely! As a map freak and a Tolkien freak, her atlas has a favored place on my bookshelf, too... It's so well-thumbed, pretty soon I'll have to replace it!

Her work was an example of high Arda scholarship. []

This is very sad news. Her maps were always as true as she could make them to the information in the source material. I particularly liked the way she re-drew JRRT's early maps in the Ambarkanta, which give the only good impression of the eastern lands and the Orocarni Mountains that I know of.
