While this may have been re-wrtten before publication, it seems to indicate that trolls breed under mountains. Gandalf talks about things that "gnaw the Earth" underground: likewise Tom, Bert and William mention "since we came down from the mountains," and "went back to the stuff of the mountains from which they are made" in sunlight. Morgoth could only "mock, not make," meaning that he could only breed twisted descendants from Eru's creatures, not craft actual new ones. Also, Ents could live only on water, perhaps Morgoth taught them to consume solid minerals as well? (Treebeard says that Ents are stronger than Trolls, because Ents are made from "the bones of the Earth:" a term which Tolkien also uses to refer to the walls of Minas Tirith, indicating some type of super-strong rock. Therefore trolls might have been made of the softer stone in caverns, like limestone etc. which hardened in sunlight, while Ents consumed sunlight and special healing minerals from Fangorn, which was said to have healed Merry and Pippin's wounds by drinking it (and I don't mean Ent-draughts, since this was before they met Treebeard). Finally, the "cave-trolls" in Moria seem to have come from those deeper places.
