Now, I only have the Canadian XVIIth edition to hand, and in the passage that I am interested in it says, 'Banff slid numb'. Anyone have a different version?

Ah, you mean Goblins hunting Hobbits! Or, as it more commonly known nowadays, Blind-man's Buff.
(Incidentally, I always thought it was "blind-man's bluff", or at least I'm fairly sure that was how I always pronounced it as a child. Obviously my many re-readings of The Hobbit didn't teach me how to pronounce it properly.)
