Is it possible? There are three films worth of footage. Is it possible to make a close to "perfect cut" of all the scenes to make one that is bearable? Say, cutting out everything with Tauriel, Legolas, all the dumb jokes, and so on...

One could arguably make a "close to perfect" cut, but one would still be stuck with an imperfect product. There'd be no way of avoiding the Azog monstrosity, surely. But this might make it all less cringeworthy, no?

I wonder if Numenorean Sword Trainer is still around and would be willing to try it. He/She did that for FotR.

You might get one film worth of good stuff out of the three if you care to mine the hubris.
