DPR, I think you might have missed the point. FotR was filmed mostly in 2000, twelve years ago. Ian Holm was 68 when the trilogy was filmed; he is now 80. []

If The Hobbit was filmed with Ian Holm now, then Bilbo would actually have aged backwards, being older during The Hobbit than he was in LotR. Plus, 80 years old is pretty old to be committing to that kind of filming schedule. Look at the issues they have had with Christopher Lee not being able to travel. []

I agree that Martin Freeman is considerably younger, at 40, but Ian Holm was always pretty young looking, and Martin Freeman, lord love him, is kind of crumpley-looking. In a totally sexy way, IMO. [] I think it's the best choice they could have gone with.

O, you think the smiley is looking sickly, you should see my actual face. [] Ahahaha, kidding, I am windburnt and rugged from striding around site in a surly, outdoorsy sort of way. []

Aaaaaaaaanyway... good to see our derailing skills have not diminished over the years. []

Dread Pirate Roberts:
quote:
Casting a different Bilbo is retarded and dilutes the power of The One Ring. It also contradicts the Wingnuts' previous film where Gandalf tells Bilbo, "you haven't aged a day!"
I think Gandalf was just being nice, because indeed Bilbo looks a lot older than when he's shown finding the One Ring in the prologue-scene.
I don't know if this was intentional

As for the power of the Ring, that was always the case that they diluted it, since we're told that the good guys can't use it, when in fact this was the Ring's true danger, not simply Sauron getting it; he was Sauron, not Sinestro from Green Lantern!

In fact I had a lot of trouble editing my Fellowship movie to cure this problem; if you watch it at the Council of Elrond, I managed to have Gandalf explain to Boromir why they can't, keeping the original plot intact (I also managed to have Elrond raise the river at ford, rather than Arwen doing it, very nice IMHO [] ).
But I digress; the point is that if they diluted the Ring's power that way, they clearly diluted its Geritol-properties too.

Edit: Notice that neither Bilbo nor Frodo are fat in the movies before their adventures, like they expressly are in the book; a touch of political-correctness?

Something has been bothering me with the appearance of some of Thorin and Company ever since I saw the first trailer. It's the beards! Why are the beards for some of the dwarves so short? Quite undwarvish.

The simplest answer is so that you can tell them apart. In the LotR movies, all Dwarfs looked alike-- even Gloin himself at the Council of Elrond.

But now that Dwarfs are the main characters, they decided to make them look different... even ridiculously so.
Like with Bombur, whom they designed as having no beard at all; just a mutton-chop mustache, so you can see that he has a triple-chin to accentuate his fatness (since of course his huge waistline alone, along with breaking Bilbo's chair when he sits on it, makes it impossible to tell).

In short: they have Bombur, a Dwarf, shaving!
If you want to talk about "un-Dwarflike," shaving is about as far as it gets.

Perhaps PJ et al are just trying to open some new marketing revenue streams by creating product placement opportunities. Don't be surprised to see a strategically placed can of Edge Shaving Gel when one of Thorin's boys trots off to the loo. []

I'd say that action-figures were more the angle, as well as video-games etc.
They figure that the more different they can make the Dwarves look, the more "toyetic" they become. COLLECT ALL 13!

No sound on this computer, sadly, so I can't comment on the music.
For some reason the trailer reminds me somewhat of Willow.

Which is why Bilbo is as indispensable to the collection as he was to the to the Party! I see you're new to marketing []

Here is a short sneak peek of a scene with Gandalf and Bilbo.

I bought my tickets today for the first midnight showing. []

Edit: Is it the same music as the "pity of Bilbo" scene from Fellowship?

I think it's just music lifted directly from The Fellowship of the Ring and dubbed over this scene...

Edit: I mean this clip.

Ok....
Bilbo not wanting to wear a sword, but Gandalf pressuring him.
Gandalf preaching non-violence to Bilbo, instead of Bilbo learning it on his own.
And now Gandalf knows about weapons that were made before he even crossed the sea.

Directly opposite the book... pretty much just as I expected! []

That's just my guess. The first part of the music in the clip is taken directly from the Council of Elrond; it blends into the music which plays when Gandalf talks to Frodo in Moria.

The latter tune almost certainly will be heard at some point in The Hobbit, because it's on the soundtrack.

I'm afraid I do have a tendency still to be awake at 4.30am (even when I have to get up at 6.30am), but at the moment I'm at the more respectable time of half past two in the afternoon. (Only just up, of course.)
