Finwë is not really an exception, he still lives in the Halls of Mandos, he just (unlike most, but not all) doesn't come back from Mandos to Valinor.
quote:
As for how long Arda lasts: well it's still here in Phase I, as far as that goes, so technically the Elves would still be there in Aman until Arda 2.0 comes out.
Exactly, that's what I expect them to do. []

Then they will die.

But as Finrod was hoping (and you're right that Galadriel seems even more sure of it), even they may have part in a resurrection in Arda 2.0 (Arda Remade / Arda Envinyanta), very different from the restoration from Mandos, which is really only a continuation of their life in Arda 1.0 (Arda Marred / Arda Sahta).

I found an old discussion of this topic - perhaps we ought to continue there?

I think I read somewhere that Christopher Lee will be making an appearance as Sarumann.... White Council scene perhaps?

Yeah, there has been some speculation about Christopher Lee returning, but so far there hasn't been any definite word. One would assume that they scripted Saruman into the story, considering the fact that he is meant to be the head of the White Council. Anyhow, we shall see.

My interest was greatly diminished when Del Toro -- understandably -- left the project.

From the IMDB page, Saoirse Ronan is playing "Itaril".

OK, so who the hell is Itaril???? (It's a sort of dumbed down version of the Quenya form of Idril.) No such character exists in The Hobbit, or even in the Second and Third Ages.

There's a lot of great names on that list. This will probably result in a lot of ham to ham combat, especially with figures such as McKellen, Lee, and the guy they'll pick for Smaug. Well if we can't have accuracy (this is PJ, after all), maybe at least we can have hilarity and hyperbole. And probably a little bit of elvish porn or something equally unrelated.

[] On that IMDb cast list, 5 of the first 6 characters listed weren't even in the book, and 1, Itaril, I don't think existed in Middle Earth ever! Aside from having a bunch of short people and a dragon this movie may not have much in common with The Hobbit at all. []

E: What's this Itaril supposed to be anyway? Dwarf, hobbit, elf, woman?
E2: Just clicked the link, apparently she's some female elf warrior.. Translation: Orblando's girlfriend... ug []

Brian Blessed as king Dáin: Could work. I enjoyed Blessed in The Black Adder

I have enjoyed Mikael Persbrandt earlier, but PJ'll probably fúck Beorn up.

Like I said, it's a simplified version of a Quenya name. From the Elvish names index in The Silmarillion:
quote:
Idril's name in Quenya form was Itarillë (or Itarildë), from a stem ita- 'sparkle'.
Essentially, this character is a creation of fan fiction. []

Just as in LOTR, TH is lacking female characters. Rather than base his work on this obvious flaw, PJ chose to improve the story. Again. []

This smacks of typically meddlesome film marketing. I bet some studio genius (or PJ himself) decided that they needed a 'strong' female character in order to get girls to buy tickets.

I would have preferred it if he made some of the Dwarves female instead... []

People can gripe about casting but that's not what will ruin this film. The screenplay and direction are going to suck.

Like the Rugrats "improve" an art-museum... Tommy may think that the Mona Lisa looks better with blue hair and a green mustache, but I doubt that Da Vinci would agree.. or most art-lovers.

Expect even the trolls to be face-palm worthy, and look nothing like Tolkien's drawing of them (they certainly didn't in the other movies).

"Oh, Tolkien wasn't serious, he was just writing a children't story and just didn't want to scare the kiddies... but that's not what trolls really look like, or what happened."

Yeah... it's like that.

I've only skimmed this thread I admit, but I don't see anyone mentioning this, so it may be wrong, but... I'm THOUGHT I saw somewhere that Bilbo had dropped out. Does anyone know more about this?

(Also, is it just me that thinks the make-up artists are gong to be VERY busy with some of those dwarves-to-be? Some of them look more suited to being Rangers or Rohirrim than dwarves. Oh well, we shall see!)

One of the dwarves (Fili or Kili) was replaced. Pretty sure Bilbo is still the same, though.

The young actress from "Atonement" and "The Lovely Bones" with the beautiful but impossible name has dropped out, though.
