Filming is scheduled to begin in February 2011. Peter Jackson will direct both installments, which (sigh) will be filmed in 3D. While some sets have already been constructed in New Zealand, it's still unknown whether or not filming will actually take place there because of the ongoing labor disputes.

The NZ industry and SAG boycott just ended! The Hobbit may be filmed there yet!

Yeah, but apparently Warner Bros. has received some more enticing offers from other locations, financially speaking (tax breaks and such), that they've sent people down to New Zealand to discuss whether or not they want to stay there and risk the local actors boycotting in the middle of production or if they want to pick up and move production of the movies elsewhere.

I can't believe all the drama surrounding this production. Is it because production of The Lord of the Rings went so smoothly (relatively speaking)? []

It's because the movie is so big and everyone wants it that all of these greedy people think they have the leverage to get what they want by threatening it. It wouldn't have happened on LotR because no one knew if they would succeed. It's like, they've come this far, at what point will they say "that's enough it's done." For all we know MGM is banking on this film alone to perform. Now everyone wants to get in on the opportunity to hold the production for ransom so to speak.
