Hey there,
does anyone know where I can find an actual Tolkien text that states how the punctuation was used in Tengwar - I find lots and lots of places on the www that mention the common ones (1-4 dots, double tilde, question and exclamation mark, and parenthesis) but none of them mention where they actually have it from. Only the Dan Smith page cites Appendix E as its source, but that isn't correct, since punctuation isn't mentioned in that text.

Can it be that Tolkien never actually mentions the punctuation, but just uses it - so that all we know is what we can guess from his own tengwar texts/translations...?

Any help is appreciated! []

I seem to recall that there is some information about the point in VT46, but I'm not a Tengwar specialist - and I don't have VT46, I just read it once []

I can't remember where, but Tolkien definitely wrote about the matter, I think. I'll try to gather info []

'Unfortunaytely' that probably means that Tolkien didn't mention the punctuation himself, but just used it -

I found the DTS that MB mentioned and circled the exclamation mark, the question mark and the dots. I suppose that is the the closest thing I'll get to an actual Tolkien 'quote'... Here they are:

Thanks a lot Eluchil, and be sure to pass on my thanks to Måns Björkman - maybe, since he is Swedish, he'd be interested in seeing the first version of my Danish Tengwar Mode. And maybe some of you people on MT could be interested as well. In any case: the project-site is here:

I just had a look at your site, Lassë and although I, of course, don't understand a single thing, I found it quite well done and clear - as far as I can say. Your idea of the 5 dots for the "å" letter is brilliant [] very aesthetic []

Haha thanks, but Måns uses the same in his Swedish tehtar-based mode though. Which is quite strange, since I got the idea before seeing his work... Which I suppose just means that it is the obvious way to do it (AA = Å)... anyways, it is only an advantage if the different modes somehow correspond...
