Cool! Let's make this THE dictionary thread!

The vowels of Quenya will be pronounced more or less correctly by a native speaker of practically any mainland European language (well, OK, not Danish!). For English and American speakers, a little care is required: pronounce the vowels as you would in, say, Spanish.

In fact, I think the Danish vowels are quite quenya...

By the way? is anyone "fluent", in Quenya? I myself have been studying it, it would be nice to have someone to talk to.

I'm teaching myself Sindarian as that was more comonly used at the time of LTR than Quenya.

Sindarin is more used at the time of lotr, but its also the most recent form of Elvish so its the most complex. Quenya is an earlier form and therefore closer to the original and more simple elvish dialect. It is therefore MUCH easier to learn. I think it might also be more complete (as in there's enough of it available to be learnt so that it can be spoken without making much up) than Sindarin.

I'm just beginning to learn Quenya, so when I get fluent, I'd love to practice with people!

I look forward to practicing with you then. I'm learning Sindrin too, but I'm more fond of Quenya. Quenya tapes would be handy, unfortunately I know a lot of people who would obsess over the languages, lol, might not be to healthy for them.

well, I'm first aiming at finishing the LotR trilogy (half way through tTT at the mo) then I'm gonna start trying to learn it. At the moment all I is mellon. Oh how advanced!! But it's weird how a few months ago i hadn't even considered reading Tolkien's books (outside the Hobbit), let alone being hooked on them...

and as for the fonts, try DS's Fantasy Fonts for Windows, as the name suggests, only for windows, but the font's are awesome...

Radagast's Bestiary
The sites listed are very good, and certainly Tolkien's is the best (unless you can find some Elves and Dwarfs still around). The book I use a lot is The Languages of Middle Earth by Ruth S. Noel (who also wrote The Mythology of Middle Earth). The former was published in 1980.

Thanks for the sites!!! I am learning phrases of the sindarin form(but I might as well learn Quenya while I'm at it), but taking it seriously will be much more challenging I think. Someone should seriously think about making audio tapes and/or cds....

Well, Legolas and Feanor's LLS you'll have another study buddy. I've got basic vocab of both Quenya and Sindarin but is there any help on the verb conjugation?

The closest I can come (which is by no means correct, as I'm just learning Quenya) would be:

Elye cára vista ve yerna lingwë.

Direct translation:

You are making air like old fish.

I think. I'm not sure so if anyone wants to correct my translation or propose a different one, feel free. I'm not even sure I got the verb tense right. This might have been better placed in the 'Translations' thread though.
