I've been wondering what exactly was the strong light that was shining so brightly on Balin's tomb when the Company is trying to get through Moria. What created the light? A self-luminous gem, like the Arkenstone? Was it the sunshine coming through a portal in the mountain? And if that's so, then couldn't the Company get out of the mountain through the portal?

Hi there Angathas
quote:
The chamber was lit by a wide shaft high in the further eastern wall; it slanted upwards and, far above a small square patch of blue sky could be seen. The light of the shaft fell directly on a table in the middle of the room: . .

Doesn't sound like anything that could be crawled through - too small and vertical (even if they could reach it). Cheers []
