Alright, we all fix things using this glorious miracle of inventions called duck-tape. Sometimes bizarre, sometimes very creative. I thought it might be cool if some of us very talented handy-man type people (or even not so handy), shared our experiences. Whether they were a success or a failure. So whether you think about it over a beer or a nice cup of coffee at work on the job-site, which is what I'm most likely to do, let me know. Let the world know that duck-tape is king. Without it the world would come apart.

Odd uses count too, the sky is the limit.
This is an open thread to anyone. Have fun.
The MadMan.

Damn, I came here hoping to find a funny graphic of ducks and tape... maybe ducks taped together... or something. []

Actually over here Duck Tape is a leading brand of duct tape, so you're both right.

I prefer gaffer tape, and I have used it successfully for many things: taping up the rattly extractor fan in my kitchen, getting my annoying ex-boyfriend to shut the hell up, and wearing a bodice without the need for a strapless bra.

Wonderful stuff. []

Darn... This is the problem if a Brand name is used to refer a product name!

Apologies Mad! for my overzealous correction []

I think that Duck Tape (the brand) was only developed because people used to mistakenly refer to it as that because they had misheard. Which begs the question: didn't anyone ever wonder why it was named after ducks?

I prefer Gaffer tape tape as well. Did you know it can hold citronella bamboo torches on to patio pillars [] ? And strangely enough, it actually comes in handy with stage lighting and sound equiptment, and holds light ropes on drum kits really well [] . The only problem is if you're the one taping it on, and they decide to do the drummer's soundcheck when your head is right next to the bass drum [] .

I've always thought it should be duct tape, too. But what man would ever listen to his wife, especially in matters of hardware? Or anything one could buy in a hardware store?
We found some interesting images when we googled it. Including ducks wrapped up in duct tape (try it, Elora dear, it works quite well) and people taped up to the wall and women wearing nothing but duct tape. []
Our son has the Duct tape = Force t-shirt.
So, what is the precise difference between duct tape and gaffer tape, then?

There was a big discussion about it, I think in the Unexpected Party, but it must have been the last one as it's not there anymore.
[]
I think basically duct tape is silver and quite sticky, gaffer tape is black and very sticky.

I think. []

There's a scholarship for the couple that can make the best prom outfits out of duct tape.

I help the bumper of my car on with duct tape for four months. Then there was too much leftover stick stuff that had long since ceased to be sticky frozen to my car (it was winter). I then had to resort to the combined forces of rope and duct tape. Hah, that held me over until I saved up enough money to have it fixed for real. []

I used to like putting it on my little brother's hairy legs while he was sleeping... []

I also held the back window of my Chevette hatchback on with it for nearly a year.

I had a pair of duct tape Jeans, and was working on a Jacket to match, but never finished... I have a friend, who made a fortune making and selling duct tape wallets and purses in high school. And I have some friends who made their Dress and Tux out of duct tape for prom. The entered into the contest to win the scholarship too, but the didn't win unfortunately. It's a shame, because it was freaking awesome. They had different colors of Duct tape and made flames with it. It was amazing...

I was expecting mostly men to post duct tape anecdotes. []
I knew I'd seen a ramble about Duct Tape in the UP; that's why I told MM it would be okay to put this thread in the Perch. I figure you'd have to be under the influence to ramble about the marvels of duct tape. But he got told by Miran and SnowWiz that he'd posted his thread in the wrong forum... and then spent the night [] @ me about it.
The broken windows of my car have had clear plastic and duct tape on them for five months now. []

didn't that HURT??? You know, after you removed it?? []

My friend Alan has a pair of Chucks that he loves so much that he refuses to throw them out. He's had them for years and years, and they have begun to fall apart, so he keeps them together with duct tape. [] His girlfriend and all of his friends BEG him to throw them out, but he refuses because they're so comfortable. They're seriously composed of *some* material and a LOT of duct tape by this point. I have a friend who gashed his lower leg open at a medieval combat event a few years ago. We used duct tape to close the wound so he could finish the battle. It worked just fine, though the situation made my wife decide that we needed more supervision at such events. []

On the subject of Duck/Duct tape...
Here's a reproduction of my post I made in the UP (which amazingly, I didn't get shouted at for making):
quote:
[...]
Gaffer tape and Duck/Duct tape (either name is fine, though 'Duck' came first) are not one and the same, though they are similar.
Gaffer tape is usually black, and always dull - so it can be used by lighting-people in productions without it reflecting light bac, unlike shiny Duck tape, and is less sticky than Duck tape, so it doesn't leave a gooey residue.

To expand: Duck tape was the original name, as it was first produced in WWII, to seal ammunition boxes. Because it was waterproof, the name 'Duck tape' was born. It then started to be used for numerous other purposes. After the war, when it started to be commercialised, they changed the colour from army green to silver, and it became used for all sorts of things at home; including heating and air-con. ducts, hence the name 'Duct tape'.

For next week, I want a 2000 word essay on the adhesive qualities, and uses thereof of the tape. []

My son used gaffer tape on my car one of the times he retaped the plastic on the broken windows. It didn't work anywhere near as well; it came undone within a couple days, where the duct tape jobs ususally last two or three weeks.

I'm actually called the Tape Fairy over in these parts. Every time there's a birthday present to wrap, everyone gives it to me, and I wrap it perfectly. I used to do this "professionally" at a store I worked at, and I know how to wrap pretty much anything. But I use a lot of tape, so by the time people open their gifts they're like... "Uh-oh... there's invisible tape all over. KITTY, DID YOU WRAP THIS?" []

Lyra, nice try. You're talking to a gal who lived on a real, working, commercial farm. I had ducks. I had tape. I have tried it. It didn't work out well. [] [] []

The geese taping was even worse! I do recommend taping one's two younger brothers together though. That worked fabulously! [] [] []

RANDOM FACT: in Star Wars Episode IV, Carrie Fisher had to wear packaging tape when she wore that white dress because a bra was too see-through. She joked about auctioning off the chance to pull the tape off when the takes were over. []
So apparently, using tape like that works...
