Hee hee; no, I haven't. []
I'm currently reading a book called There and Back Again, by...someone... which is about Tolkien's England, and references Carpenter pretty extensively.
[]
Unfortunately, the phrase that popped into my head was "Foul Ole Ron".

Apparently it could also be Happy Birtday, Tollers. []

Edit:
Or perhaps rather, as has been pointed out to me,
Happy Birthday, Tollers.

Why, did those who knew Tolkien call him Ron? I just thought that it was odd calling him by his first name as no-one seems to think of him by his Christain names. I could have said happy birthday Johnny.

I almost forgot this year, but luckily Herendil inadvertently reminded me.

quote:
On the 3rd January 1892 JRR Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. To celebrate this event, on this day each year Tolkien fans around the world are invited to raise a glass and toast the birthday of this much loved author.

The toast is "The Professor".

For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies:

To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words 'The Professor' before taking a sip (or swig, if that's more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.

http://www.tolkiensociety.eu/toast/2009/

For those who haven't done it before, you can sign up on the Tolkien Society website and leave a comment about the toast.

I have a suggestion for Tolkien fans who want to do a bit more than just raise a glass in memory of the Professor.

If several fans come together, they can each bring a favorite quotation or two and read it for the others. After each citation, the group toasts the Professor.

It would be an opportunity to share some Hobbit and Elf recipes -- make some lembas or white cakes, for example.

A simple dinner to observe the Professor's birthday would be very much like Frodo's last birthday in Bag End before he left the Shire.

Nice idea, but I don't know that many Tolkien fans in real-life, maybe I'll just say the odd quotation to myself!
