Athene, it's so cute! I wish our seagulls looked more like that. I wouldn't mind being mobbed by those when I go to the beach.

I'm not Danish... but close enough. [] I've never heard of anyone going to Greenland as a tourist. I haven't seen it as a destination on any travel brochure or in any advertisement. I'm sure that there are some adventurous people that travel there in the summers... but I don't think the infrastructure is there for tourists.

It seriously is cute. [] But guillemots really are the penguins of the north; unlike penguins they can just about fly, although they are pretty crap at it. I've seen them in the wild; they are very dapper. []

We also have scary big gulls that attack you and steal your chips. [] We hates them.

Thanks! I had seen that they had the world's largest national park. It surprised me, I had never heard of it before. After reading more about it, I couldn't decide if it sounded exciting or just cold.

We have them all over here. In middle school they would dive-bomb people for food. One of my classmates through an apple in frustration and actually managed to kill one. Then the school had someone come in and talk to us about animal cruelty and the fines associated with killing birds. []

[] That is awesome! Your friend must have ninja-like throwing skills! I dunno, unless they are endangered I think it's good. Might discourage the others from being such pirates.

My mother was eating fish and chips on a pier in Cornwall, and literally had it taken out of her hand by a herring gull. And they are HUGE. She fears birds anyway, but I think this was the final straw.

That reminds me of the booze-loving monkeys []

Well, and it also reminds me of something we watched in an animal behavior class I took. This guy was studying this group of birds who regularly destroyed the cars of the skiers who came up for the winter to the resort. These birds would do anything they could...rip windshield wipers away, ropes from the bike rack, etc...Some of the skiers came back to their car while he was studying the birds and they were shocked to find what had happened. And then they were again shocked that someone had been standing there the whole time, video-taping it. []

I was riding my old scooter once, and a pigeon got stuck under the wind visor, flapping in my face whilst I'm nearly crashing. Horrid.

That guillemot is very handsome, and so smartly turned out in his morning suit. Just like the emperor penguins [] I loves them; their huddling together and mating for life and joint rearing thing []

I have the Attenborough books, you know, the Life series? He is such a wonderful writer and the photos are breathtaking. My favourite bit from Life of Birds is the bit about Emperor penguins getting about on land; he writes (IIRC):
quote:
Then they stand upright, and plod about with that impassive solemnity which makes them in our eyes, so endearing.

Yes, yes they do.

I love how the emperor penguins huddle together in the freezing cold winter and take it in turns to stand on the outside. Then daddy has the egg for months while mummy gets the food. Evolved cooperation and reciprocal altruism at its best.

Attenborough's documentaries are the best. His series on mammals was great. He has a wonderful calm, kind, voice, much like dear old Oliver Postgate [] []

Me too, and then mum comes back wanting to see her chick for the first time, and the dad is often so protective that he is reluctant to give it to her (it has been sitting on his feet)! []

Mummy penguin: Out of the way, people, lady with a crop full of fish, comin' through! []
Daddy penguin: Over here!
Mummy penguin: Hi honey, I'm home.
Daddy penguin: Hey sweetie. Good fishing?
Mummy penguin: Not bad, if sardines are your thing. So? Boy, girl? Where is it? *pokes around his feet*
Daddy penguin: Hey! Ow! Watch the beak! He's... [] sleeping.
Mummy penguin: Oh really. [] Come on, hand him over. Mummy wants to meet her widdle boy, doesn't she? []
Daddy penguin: No, it's, we were down at the crêche, tired him out, heheh, poor little thing.. [] *chuckles nervously*
Mummy penguin: [] Oh honestly Martin, you do this every year...

Keo - I'd be going to the school in September. That should give me time to save up right? Gee I hope so. Right now, the exchange rate is the perfect time to go - the tuition is much cheaper now than when I tried to go in 2007.

By the way everyone, Bellygirth just sent me an e-mail and he wants to give his craziest German regards to you all - he's off the internets doing his Thesis. This guy never stops doing school does he? [] []

Why are you annoyed?

Inc' - don't be jealous. I just e-mailed him because I wondered how he was doing and I was surprised he got back to me so quickly. He's doing well, so I'm glad. []

edit: by the way, there were MASS layoffs at work, and I survived once again. I don't know how I do, because I really don't like this job. [] [] But I am certainly thankful to still have it. []

I just got home from the gym, and this nasty kid (maybe 15, 16) on the treadmill beside me kept looking over and staring at my boobs.

[] Eww.

I think I'm going to start going in the morning when kids are in school. And it's not as crowded, anyway.

*pouts* Good to know someone is going to school.

*sigh*

My whole math drama is stressing me out so much that I'm literally on the verge of a mental breakdown right now. I'm about to go and have a good cry in the car.

I'm so ready for this to be over and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

Sweet Keo [] Seriously, with the right teacher (preferably ones that give open book or open note tests), even you and I can do well in math classes. Just get them over with.

Well, I am in way over my head with several lit classes. I don't know why I was so stupid to think I could handle so many. Plus one of the teachers is funny, but kind of a jerk.

On the other hand, the lit teacher I just had is a total hotty, left-handed, great personality, great sense of humor, and half the class had taken her before (always a good sign).

Weird first meeting, though. She came in, organized some papers, and told us that she had to go talk to the teacher next door because he might need to borrow our room to show a film. She came back a few minutes later and took role. Midway through that, the department head came in and asked the teacher if she could see her for a moment. No sooner had Professor left that three campus security guys (big big guys in police uniforms) came in, with another stationed at the door!

The one in charge started asking (in a commanding voice) "Josh? Josh? Where are you, Josh?" He walked up to a student two rows to my left and said "Are you Josh?"
"No," replied the guy. "I'm David."
So the officer asked a couple other guys if they were Josh, but finally came back to "David" and said "You need to come with me."

So "David" (henceforth known as Josh) got up with a glare and left with the officers (who escorted him off the campus).

Then the teacher came back and told us that the guy had been banned from the campus prior to this and had been in various lit classes impersonating another student ever since. [] She recognized him when she came in, which is why she left the first time: to tell the security people.

Also I have a week to read a Jane Austen book []
