Road to Rivendell - A Word Aside

"When you walk through that portal and into the other world," the Voice said, "it will close behind you, never to be opened again.
You were born here, but you don't belong here, you know. You need to get to know your own world now.
Today it was time for your parents to go to Valinor. Today it is time for you to go to Middle-earth."

Barufiniel looked back at the two silver birches she had just passed between. She hoped to catch a last glimpse of the glorious summer morning she had left behind, but it was gone. The leaves of the trees on the small hill where she was standing were golden with the colours of autumn. Vast plains of grass stretched out in front of her.
Rohan.
These plains would be Rohan.
Her parents had told her about the land they had left when they accidentally stumbled through the portal, five hundred years ago.
She was not born then. She was born in - that other place, as she would have to call it from now on. Narnia. That other place.
Now, Middle-earth was home. Even though it was only a name to her.
A name, and all the stories her parents had told her.
Of how her father had escaped from the fall of Gondolin as a young boy, after both of his parents had been killed by the enemy. Of how her mother had been brought up in the golden forests of Lórinand. - They had all loved the forests of Narnia. That other place.
The Voice had told her that she would pass through the same portal her parents had come by. She would come back to the same point they had left from.
What is more, she would come back to the same point in time they had left from. The five hundred years in Narnia didn't count in Middle-earth. Here, it was still the year 2758 of the Third Age.
War was brewing in Rohan, and her parents had advised her to try to make her way back to Rivendell, where they had lived earlier.

But how would she be able to find Rivendell?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The aim of this RP - Road to Rivendell -
is to explore how Barufiniel finds her way from Rohan to Rivendell (and how she is received there).
She will find companions for her journey. At the outset she knows nobody.
She finds people who are going in the same direction, forming a small company, even some who will join her for the whole journey to Rivendell. She may also meet people who just guide the company on its way for a little while.

I have tried to find an interesting year for the journey. TA 2758 is the beginning of the Long Winter. There is "great suffering and loss of life in Eriador and Rohan. Gandalf comes to the aid of the Shire-folk." I want her company eventually to meet Gandalf and to join him on his mission, helping with the skills and resources she and her companions have got.
Gandalf (played by Oro) will meet us after a while.

War is brewing in Rohan. It is invaded both from the east and from the west. The land "was overrun; and those who were not slain or enslaved fled to the dales of the mountains." King Helm Hammerhand was besieged in the Hornburg (later known as Helm's Deep) and perished there. (see Appendix A-II of RotK)
This may not affect Barufiniel's journey directly, other than meeting with some of the refugees.

If there is a wish for it, I suppose it could be possible to have a separate story-line (once the company is on its way) in Edoras/Hornburg, ending with one or two refugees who eventually join the company. We should discuss that first.
(As I've heard about no such wish so far, I'll just forget about it, and rather delete this paragraph soon.)

Other than that, I don't want this RP to be focussed on fighting. The company will no doubt come into circumstances where they will need to defend themselves, but fighting shouldn't be it's focus. We're not trying to help in the wars of Rohan, we're getting away from them.

The RP is meant to be very closely Tolkien-related, mostly something that could have been entered in his books (well, sort of ...)
I want all characters to be of the races that would be relevant for the area (not many elves in Rohan, but Barufiniel is perhaps not the only one). Humans, hobbits, - even dwarves if it comes naturally. But only Middle-earth races - much as I love them in Narnia, no centaurs or unicorns.
None of them know Barufiniel. But since some of them may know one or both of her parents, I'm going to put her parents' profiles in a separate post as well. They do not come into the story at all, though, as they have left for Valinor.

At the moment the company is large enough, but one or two well thought out characters may be accepted. Cameo roles are welcome.
As we get closer to the Shire, we will need Hobbits, and when we get to Rivendell, we will need Elrond and other Elves. Even Glorfindel may come in, as he knew Barufiniel's father all the way back in Gondolin.
I could make a separate list of what characters - hobbits and others - are documented to be around at that time. If you want to go for one of those, feel free, if not, create your own character. (I haven't made such a list yet, ask me if you want it, or check family trees of the RotK Appendices.)

Post your profile here, and I'll tell you if it is appropriate and add it to the list. Please include Name, Race, Age, Gender, Physical description, History, Special skills (if any), Companions (animal companions if any) and Belongings (weapons, jewellery, special objects, etc).

If someone is visualising their character and wants to show the others, they may link to a picture here.
But I only want one post per character, so if you find a better picture later, come back and edit your first link.
And only links, no posting of pictures in the thread.
(Inspired by "What I think you look like" - but I want to keep it down to a moderate level.)

And please don't use signatures in the story itself. Here in the AWA they are OK.

Enjoy!

Before that, his life was simply a struggle to find his next meal, to survive.

Player: Roccowen Eilonwyiel
Name: Aran Súrëo (his name is branded on his neck underneath the mane in Tengwar scipts)
Race: Horse
Age: Mid age, but still plenty of energy
Gender: Male
Physical Description: 62 inches, 15.2 hands; dark bay (this is the basic appearance)
History: He was raised by a elvish horseman near Lothlorien. For several years he was a war horse, but his master died in battle, and he was set free by another elf. He has had his freedom for little more than a week and is exploring all the land he can. He has galloped far and recently reached Rohan, where he has alluded capture by the horselords there several times.

Player: Éomer
Name: Folcmund son of Fasthelm
Race: Man (Eorling)
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Description: Although he is a couple of inches above average Rohirric height, Folcmund is still just as hardened and brawny as any Man of Rohan due to years of patrolling the Westfold for Dunlending raids (and the occasional invading Orc from Moria or Mount Gundabad, though they rarely travel so far south). His long blonde hair hangs loose around his head, and his beard (which Folcmund normally takes care to keep neatly trimmed) has covered much of his ruggedly handsome face. His ice-blue eyes are constantly searching, as if he is always on guard; after the past few days, he's had to be. Folcmund is clad in his armor and carries his sword, spear, and shield with him at all times because, frankly, he hasn't been able to reach a safe location where he can be rid of it all.
History: The youngest son of Fasthelm, a nobleman of the Westfold, Folcmund learned from a very young age how to ride a horse and how to fight. The Westfold, especially in recent times, has been under constant threat by raids from Dunland, and Fasthelm would not allow either of his sons to reach manhood without being able to defend themselves and the Mark. Folcmund and Déormund, his brother, both grew into strong riders and warriors and spent much of their days patrolling the Westfold and beyond the Gap of Rohan, getting a close-up look at the Dunlandish way of life. Because of these forays into the west, the two also dealt closely with Freca and his son Wulf, and it came as no surprise to the two when they heard of Freca's insolence against King Helm at Edoras, nor were they surprised when they heard of Helm's response to it.
What did surprise them, however, was when the Riddermark was invaded by Wulf and his Dunlending forces in 2758. Gondor could not send help as they were assailed by Corsairs in the south, and more enemies poured into Rohan from the east, spreading its forces thin. Folcmund, Déormund, and Fasthelm all participated in several early battles and were with Helm Hammerhand at the Fords of Isen. The invading armies crushed Helm's forces, and Déormund was killed in that battle. As the Rohirrim were scattered, most fled to the Hornburg, but Folcmund and his father were cut off from the rest of the army. Fasthelm was felled by arrows not far from the site of the battle, but Folcmund eventually managed to lose his pursuers. Now, cut off from every refuge in the south, he wanders the plains aimlessly, occasionally attacking a Dunlending camp if he happens to run across one, but mostly searching for a way to get to the Hornburg or to Dunharrow.
Skills: Folcmund is, of course, an incredibly skilled horseman. He is also an accomplished swordsman and spearman, but he is also well-educated, too. He knows of the tales of the Elf-folk in the north, though he has never seen evidence that they really exist.
Belongings: Everything on Folcmund's person is now everything he owns. That includes his armor, his sword, his spear, his shield, some rations, and a waterskin.
Companion: His horse, Grimfola.

Player: Andreth
Name: Amananna ('blessed gift')
Race: Human (will elaborate)
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Physical description: She resembles her mother (from Rohan) in sharing her height and wheat blonde hair, yet she is a touch more slender and has grey eyes of a particular shade not seen among her people. These traits, everyone assumes, are from her father.
History: Her mother, while she lived, was a clothier. She died while giving birth to her only daughter. Her father was a man who passed through their land, and his stay there was very brief. He has no idea that he has a daughter. His name has been forgotten. Amananna was raised by friends of her mother (and named by them as well, though why they chose Quenya is a mystery even to them, it just seemed right).
Special skills: She is an incredibly skilled clothier, something she was taught by her mother's friends, but a skill that she perfected on her own in a desire to learn something of her mother's life. She is also a skilled rider, though her work doesn't leave her as much time as she would prefer for that pursuit.
Companions: A white filly, Ëarsúl
Belongings: She wears on a silver chain, nearly always hidden under her clothes, a teardrop-shaped diamond pendant that was supposedly a gift from her father to her mother.

Player: Rúnya Naira
Character name: Alcaira (red ray of light)
Race: Elven(and a quarter Rohirric)
Age: 19(in human)
Gender: Female
Physical description: Waist long wavy golden red hair, light brown eyes(a bit of green), very tall and slender(as all elves are).
History: Since her father, Callaráto,(who had mortal blood in him) was killed in a great battle a few months before she was born and her mother, Airamaurëa, died in childbirth. Alcaira was taken from her birth home, Rivendell, so she could be brought to her mortal relatives. When none could be located Rangers left her on the doorstep of a small Rohirric home hoping that the Valar guided them to a good family. The family that she was left to accepted and loved her as their own, and even though she was happy and content Alcaira always felt that she must someday go to her immortal birth home, Rivendell.
Growing up Alcaira wasn't very often noticed as elven even though she had the flawless skin of elves and her ears were somewhat pointy, everyone she knew assumed she was of human blood, of Rohirric blood.
Now is the start of her journey to Rivendell, her journey to find who she truly is....
Skills: She taught herself archery, and is very skilled with a bow. Also her mortal father and brother(adoptive father and brother) taught her how to use the sword, and she is known as being very skilled with a blade.
Belongings: A beautiful turquoise(more blue then green) gem that hangs from a golden chain on her neck, which was given to her by her birth mother Airamaurëa(red dawn). And a wondrous intricately made sword, which was handed down to her mortal brother, Rion, who gave it to her to take on her long journey.
Companion: Her faithful horse Hrívë.

History: Used to live in the Shire, but moved to Rivendell to learn from the elves.
Skills: Shooting arrows, throwing knives, sneaking, and climbing

Player: Mahanaxar the Spoony Bard
Name: Grîm
Race: Dwarf (Durin's Folk)
Age: 56
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Grîm stands at an average height for dwarven males, about 4'. He is stout and sturdy with rough brown eyes and an olive complexion which is typical, but what makes him stand out a bit is his fiery red hair.
History: Grîm is currently leading an expedition to find a certain haven of metallic resources and jewel deposits that is rumored to exist somewhere on the edge of the White Mountains in the human nation of Rohan. He figured that Man has no real appreciation for such things so he felt obligated to relieve them of its burden. He just needs to figure out where they are... his companions have since left him due to their lack of faith and overwhelming assumptions that Grîm had in fact gone mad with lust for this alleged cavern, as he does have a rather unhealthy obsession with presious stones.. even for a dwarf.
Skills: He's miner and jewel expert but is also quite adept at close-quarters combat. Has medium skill with throwing axes.
Belongings: A general-purpose backpack with ordinary supplies (rope, food, etc.) in it as well as mining tools. For weaponly he carries one battle axe strapped behind his backpack and carries five throwing axes just in case.

Player: Justin Warrick
NAME: Éolana
AGE: 22
RACE: Human (Rohirric)
GENDER: Female
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: Éolana is tall, slender and very elegant. She moves with the grace of nobility. Her hair is long, thick and blonde, and her piercing blue eyes can alternately burn or move to tears.
PERSONALITY: Éolana, because of her position, has been trained and educated beyond the average of Rohirric society. She is kind, but has been known at times to be a bit condescending and conceited, although this is almost to be expected. She has a good heart when it comes down to it, although she is not aware of the things many of the Rohirrim have had to put up with for survival. She is used to having the very best, and because of this does not like to have to do with less, or even worse, to do without,
HISTORY Éolana is the youngest daughter of Helm Hammerhand, and as such was sent away to the supposed safety of the country when danger threatened. When Orcs attacked her village, she alone survived, grabbing the fastest horse, and miraculously escaping with nothing but her unbreakable will to survive...

Player: Braeden Fireheart
Character Name: Lóridrê [Nandorin for “Golden Thoughts”] {image by Filat}
Race: Elves - Laiquendi
Age: 6202 years
Gender: Female
Physical Description: Slender build; green-eyes; dark hair that looks silvery in the light; wears a grey cloak over forest-green clothes that are very functional.
Parent(s): Naróbe (N. ‘he tells tales’) [deceased] & Olsari (N. ‘day dream’). Naróbe was of mixed decent (his real name was Eluréd; he and his brother were thought to have perished, but they survived and were brought to Ossiriand). Olsari is purely of Nandorin origin; and though her ancestors declined The Great Journey to Valinor, she has now sailed there herself.
Sibling(s): None
Brief Background: Born in Ossiriand in late FA; father killed by orcs; fled with mother to southern forests (Eriador); moved to Lindon after 700SA; met Kelvatano (Noldo craftsman); Olsari moved to Greenwood around 1200SA; Lóridrê stayed there too until 1500SA, going to Lórien; met up with Kelvatano again; travelled with him throughout northern Middle-earth until returning to Lindon in 1700SA; became secretly engaged to Kelvatano in 2243SA; lost him in the Siege of Barad-dûr; stayed in Rivendell for most of the Third Age, until after Celebrían passed over the Sea; stayed in Lindon until 2700TA, and wandered through many lands in Middle-earth; in 2751TA, she came across a newborn horse (see Horse bio); in 2758TA, Olsari chose to sail over the Sea to the Undying Lands, and Lóridrê returned to Lindon to farewell her mother; after that, she began travelling south again, towards Rohan…
Horse: Áramuilë [Q. ‘Dawn Secrecy’] – Light-golden mare (white mane & tail), born early in the morning, seemingly in secret. Unfortunately her mother died after giving birth, and the little filly made no noise at all. It was only by chance that Lóridrê came upon her, and seeing her, the elf maiden took care of her, bringing her to Rivendell where the horse was looked after until she was old enough to be ridden. Lóridrê was given her when Áramuilë was one year old.
Belongings: A dagger and pendant crafted by Kelvatano (still working on descriptions).
Skills: Very good with bow and sword, but does not carry either; can communicate with the wild animals of the land and air; understands Quenya, Sindarin, Nandorin, some Dwarvish, and the Common Tongue.

Player: Hoom will play him as a minor character
Character name: Isumbras Took III
Literary origin: named by Tolkien
Race: Hobbit
Age: 93
Gender: Male

Player: Hoom
Character name: Ferumbras Took
Literary origin: named by Tolkien
Race: Hobbit
Age: 58
Gender: Male
History: As Bandobras the Bullroarer won renown for his exploits at the Battle of Greenfields, Ferumbras stalked the halls of the Great Smials, consoling the families of deceased warriors, and tending to his father’s health. His brother’s victory over the goblin hoards seemed, to Ferumbras, rather trivial, in comparison to the devastation the battle had caused in Tuckborough, and the surrounding lands. The sight of his people living in fear, desensitised Ferumbras to the ‘glorious’ conquest that followed, and he had since become a recluse, with the burden of the innocence the Shire had lost, perpetually haunting him.
Now hobbits, being the gossipy lot that they are, speculated that Ferumbras had grown jealous of his brother’s popularity, and as Isumbras’ health grew worse, some of the rumourmongers that took daily residence in the inns across the Shire, whispered that Ferumbras had more than just a little to do with it! For Ferumbras was next in line to the Thainship, and it was not uncommon to hear the observation, “Surely, being Thain is that fearsome Ferumbras’ way of finally outdoing our Bullroarer, Lord bless him.” It was for this reason that Ferumbas, a decade after the war had ended, and the Shire having returned near to its previous self, continued to be a guarded hobbit. As he aged, he took upon himself a rather dour disposition that only fuelled the accusations of his naysayers.
Marigold Chubb, Ferumbras’ wife, and their son, Fortinbras, were largely ignored by Ferumbras, but both could recall a time when he was as joyful a hobbit as any other in Tookland. Marigold still hoped that her husband would lose his acerbic nature, though she understood the toll Ferumbras’ unfounded notoriety had taken on his sensitive soul. She hoped he would return to her as he once was – a gentle hobbit, with a twinkle in his eye, far from the scrooge that he had become.
Skills: Logistics, diplomacy (an ironic skill, considering his character), and leadership.

HISTORY: The youngest daughter of a hobbit of modest means, Marigold was eleven years younger than her husband when she met and fell in love with him at the age of thirty. She was attracted to his joviality and gentleness, as well as the physical attraction they shared. They were married soon after, and had several years of happiness before his demeanor began to change.

It won't really be hers until she's married, though, and she'd really like to get on with it. Literary origin: named by Tolkien (Gormadoc Brandybuck's future wife)
Race: Hobbit
Age: ?
Gender: Female

Player: Varnafindë
Character name: Primula Green
Literary origin: created by us
Race: Hobbit
Age: 48
Gender: Female
Physical description: Light brown hair, blue eyes. Normal height for a hobbit woman. A bit on the stout side (which is fairly normal for hobbits, too). Uses traditional hobbit clothing - likes to wear flower-patterned dresses and blouses, when she can get them.
History: When the story starts, in November 2758, Primula has been a widow for just over a year. Her late husband, Andwise Green (called Andy - 2705-2757), worked as assistant to the miller, and was killed last year in an accident in the mill. They lived in a small house in Hobbiton with their three children. Primula has moved to a house in Tuckborough. She is trying to keep the house, but she finds it difficult to afford the rent. She tries to earn some money by working at Great Smials on washing days.
Her three children are Marigold (b. Jan 16th 2750), a girl of just under nine, Wilcome (called Will, b. Jan 18th 2753), a boy of just under six, and Rose (called Rosie, b. Nov 29th 2756), a girl of just over two. Marigold often helps her with the washing at Great Smials, and with looking after little Rosie. Will helps her with growing vegetables in their garden.
(After our story has ended, Will is going to be the father of a son called Holman. With Holman we're into the family trees drawn by Tolkien. Two of Holman's daughters, Rowan and Rose, are great-grandmothers of Sam Gamgee and Rosie Cotton respectively. Primula is thus great-great-great-great-grandmother of both Sam and Rosie. Her maiden name was Goodchild, so she may be related to Sam's mother, Bell Goodchild, as well.)
Skills: The usual skills needed for running a hobbit household. She likes to do embroidery, and occasionally she is able to sell some to the wealthy hobbit ladies of Great Smials. She certainly has the patience required for such activities, but usually not very much time. She has another skill which is not very common in her social circles: Her father taught her how to read! But there is even less time for that ...
Companion: They had a male kitten, called Ginger, when Marigold was little. He is roaming freely these days (probably trying to spread his genes to half of the cats in the Shire), but he usually comes back once or twice a month to be petted.
Belongings: Only the basics, as they are not a rich family. Her greatest treasure is an old book that her father gave her.

Player: Aermir Goldenflower
Character name: Dwala Baggins
Literary origin: created by us
Race: Hobbit
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Description: Dwala has dark brown hair and green eyes. She's a bit shorter than normal, but only by two inches or so.
Background: Dwala and her older brother, Hamfast, loved to play pranks (a habit they have not yet broken) and have been inseperable for most of their lives. However, now her brother is getting married and seems to barely have time for her. Upset and angry, Dwala either stays in her room these days or is out and about wandering (or rather storming and stomping) with no real destination. Because of her brother, Dwala has sworn to herself that she will never get married.
Skills: She's a master at pranks and enjoys gardening.
Belongings: Several seemingly random things laying about. She also has a slingshot her brother gave her.

Player: Aikanáro
Character name: Yavandië
Literary origin: created by us
Race: Human (Rohirric)
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Physical Description: Yavandië has golden brown hair and grey-green eyes. She has the sturdy look of someone accustomed to work and difficult travel, and she keeps a ready smile for those she deems deserving. When she is able to be, she is meticulously neat about her personal appearance and that of her surroundings.
History: Born at harvest-time in a small village near Edoras, Yavandië's upbringing was much like that of the other children in her community. She grew up strong and active, and enjoyed riding out across the plains. She worked on her family's farm when her help was needed. A few years ago, she married Gárulf, a soldier from Edoras, and the two of them settled in their own home. Earlier this year, she found herself forced to abandon their homestead when Orcs attacked. Gárulf was away, and there were few left to defend the village. Much to her sorrow, she cites this upheaval as the reason she lost the child she carried, on the road a few days later. Yavandië struggled on, making her way through the Gap of Rohan and on towards Tharbad, which she has decided is a sensible place to see out the winter.
Skills: She rides well, and is more than capable of defending herself with her polearm should the need arise.
Belongings: She carries a polearm with a curved blade at the end, and has a pack containing all that she was able to take with her when she fled her home.

Player: CrackinAndProudOfIt
Character name: Cirsolmë
Race: Umbari adaneth
Age: 20
Gender: female
Physical Description: black hair, brown eyes, olive complexion, around 5'4", slender
History: born into a middle class Umbari family with a Gondorian ancestor at some point in the past (hence the Quenya name); found work to support her mother after her father's death in battle in the galley of a warship en route to attack Gondor in the autumn of 2758; The ship sailed all the way to Isen before finally being destroyed. Cirsolmë escaped the wreck fleeing north away from the hostile lands of Rohan and Gondor before reaching Tharbad in December.
Skills: enough herb/root lore to keep herself alive off the wild throughout her 16-day journey north; cooking (as related to root/herblore); speaks Westron and Umbari
Belongings: clothes on her back; large kitchen-knife

This post will give information about Barufiniel's parents, Rameldir (Quenya: Rámeldo) and Glaerien (Quenya: Herivarya).
They do not come into the story, but she will meet people who knew them.

Barufiniel's father was an elf of the House of Glorfindel (The House of the Golden Flower), born in Gondolin (so even though he was a Noldo, he has not seen the Trees). His amilessë (mother name), which he used most, is Rameldir (in Quenya: Rámeldo), and his ataressë (father name) is Eruannon.

He's one of the children who escaped from the fall of Gondolin. His mother, who was descended from Finarfin, the son of Finwë (so he is half Noldorin royalty) sacrificed her life to save him. He also survived the attack at Sirion and went with Gil-galad to Balar, where he became one of the Noldor's best archers.

In SA 1695 he went with the force that Gil-galad sent out under Elrond because Sauron had been invading Eriador. In SA 1697 this force was forced northwards, and Elrond established a stronghold and refuge at Rivendell. Since that he stayed there with Elrond. They fought together in the Last Alliance in SA 3441. In TA 1975 he joined Glorfindel's force that crushed Angmar and drove away the Witch King.

He was often part of Celebrian's escort when she went to visit Celeborn and Galadriel. But apart from that, he had become more of a scholar and not really a fighter any more. He never fought because he enjoyed fighting anyway, he was more like Faramir in that respect.

When Celeborn and Galadriel settled down in the Nandorin realm of Lórinand (later to be known as Lothlorien) in TA 1981, Barufiniel's mother became one of the ladies of Galadriel's court. She was a scholar as well. Her name was Glaerien (in Quenya: Herivarya). She was descended (on her father's side) from Elmo, the brother of Thingol, King of Doriath, so she is related to Celeborn. On her mother's side she descends from the Nandor.

Rameldir met Glaerien at Galadriel's court, and there was great love between them.

They got married in Rivendell some time after TA 2000, and lived there for a while. Then they travelled to Gondor, partly to see the rebuilt White Tower of Minas Tirith in TA 2698, and later settled down in Rohan.

In TA 2758 they vanished (into Narnia).
They have now gone to Valinor.

Ummm....Although I'm not the greatest RPer, I would like to maybe try this one. Is that all right?

I'll give you a profile ASAP. []

Btw: What are the 'portals'? Where are they? Are there more of them? Would it be okay to use the same 'portal' idea with my character? I'm just thinking about it...don't know if I'll use the idea

Sorry, no more portals. They are a purely Narnian concept, and is the way to pass between Narnia and other worlds. And I want to keep this completely within Middle-earth.

As this is a Tolkien website, I feel I should keep other authors (C.S. Lewis) and their worlds out of the way. When I joined MT, I answered "Narnia" for "From". So later I had to work out how that could make sense. If this was a C.S. Lewis website, I could make an RP that covered her time in Narnia, ending with her passing into her own world (Middle-earth).

So I want all the other characters to belong in Middle-earth. The two trees will never work as a portal any more, and there shouldn't be a new portal between Narnia and our world before the Ninth Age (approximately).

Edit:
Good to see you, Andreth! I'll wait for your profile!

Okay, here it goes:

Player: Rómenya
Character name: Raedyn
Race: Human (Rohirric)
Age: 21
Gender: Female
Physical description: Long wavy red hair with copper highlights, grey-blue eyes, slender, tall and graceful.
History: Raedyn is a refugee from one of the eastern Rohan villages. Her parents are both dead and have been for some time. They succumbed to a fever that left the people in their village weak and defenseless. The village was later attacked and burned. Raedyn hid, but could not flee for she was seriously ill. She raged with fever for days, but finally made it through. She paid a dear price for her life though. She became blind and now walks her days in total darkness. She has been regaining her strength and trying to reach either Edoras or the Hornburg for refuge.
Skills: Is not very adept at fighting without sight, but has exellent healing abilities.
Belongings: Nothing but the clothes on her back and a silver torque from her father. She also has one small dagger in her boot, but isn't very good at using it.
Companion: A grey wolf/wild dog which she healed many years ago and the dog has, in a way, bound himself to her. He provides protection and companionship. His name is Rabô (Adûnaic for "dog").

How's that? []

Edit:

quote:
Rómenya, that is unusual, and gives an interesting twist!
Are you sure we can all handle it?

If Raedyn became blind so recently, has she adapted to her new ways of life? Can you handle her adaptation process? And can the rest of the RPers handle her special needs?

And would it be good for her to have a dog?

We certainly need someone with healing skills in the company!

She has been blind for, say, around four or five *long* months. And she's been on her own for basically all that time. She's adapted to the point of being able to get by day to day, but no, I wouldn't say that she's totally professional.

She's very stubborn in her own right, so she doesn't like pity. I'm not sure how the other players would work around her, but you can just *go with the flow*.

A dog? Hmmm....would you want another animal? Actually all the horses (exculding Rocco) would just be carrying you guys. Raedyn can't get on a horse and ride by herself. So yeah, I think a dog or something would work better.

Hmmm...you said that Romenya's character should have a dog...what about a horse. I thought that I could perhaps play the part of a seeing horse for Raedyn but possibly I could develop another role later. Or maybe I could be two horses, one for Barufiniel and one for Raedyn?

Would a guide horse for a blind woman be realistic? I would think the animal would be too big to be handy, apart from whatever other guiding skills it might have or lack.

So I would discourage it.

But a horse for Barufiniel - hmmm ... maybe that's an idea? She hasn't got it when they start, it will have to join them later. Perhaps it has noticed Ilandra's horse and that is the reason why it joins them.

Would it be a problem for me that I don't do horseriding myself?

In trying to come up with an explaination as to why a dwarf character would be in and about the Rohan area (as Moria was not recolonized yet at III 2758) my mind stumbled across a crazy idea. Would the idea of a "skin-changer" be too far-fetched? The best known (and possily only known) example would be Beorn who could change from man to bear and perhaps his son Grimbeorn the Old. Is it impossible that other such skin-changers existed? Beorn was just like any other man save for his ability so the case isn't that he was some sort of spirit or Maiar or anything of the like. Would you consider that as a character idea? If not I'll persue how to work a dwarf into the story.

Hmm...Peut-etre the horse for the blind may not work quite as I had thought, now that I look at the matter again.

I could be a horse for Barufiniel and you wouldn't need to have any great deal of knowledge about horses. I was thinking that the horse wouldn't talk, but could understand people and communicate a bit in it's own way.

If this sounds alright, I'll post a bio.

Maha, I think I would prefer a dwarf. Has he heard rumours of the Glittering Caves and come to explore them? If so, I hope he has already seen them and is on his way home to Thror in Erebor to report, because of the siege of the Hornburg which will soon take place!

Name: Aran Súrëo (his name is branded on his neck underneath the mane in Tengwar scipts)
Race: Horse
Age: Mid age, but still plenty of energy
Gender: Male
Physical Description: 62 inches, 15.2 hands; dark bay (this is the basic appearance if you want to know)
History: He was raised by a elvish horseman near Lothlorien. For several years he was a war horse, but his master died in battle, and he was set free by another elf. He has had his freedom for little more than a week and is exploring all the land he can. He has galloped far and recently reached Rohan, where he has alluded capture by the horselords there several times.

I thought that maybe he could run into Barufiniel in Rohan and become her horse, how does that sound?

Roccowen, I now have a horse! []

Would it be best if my character already knows how to ride, to avoid having to include the learning process?
And I like the link to the illustration. When the story starts, you can link from the actual story as well.

It may take some time before we can actually start, though. Some days, probably. Normally I'm not online at this time of the day, so later on people may have to wait longer for my answers.

I was thinking that Barufiniel knew how to ride, but that she had not yet met with Aran Súrëo. Or would you rather it be that he was already her horse.

I will provide the link in my first post when the RP starts.

No, I agree that Aran Súrëo is not already her horse. She does not bring a horse with her into Middle-earth.
She meets him in Rohan, as you say in the profile.

Okay, finally got somethin'. Hope you folks like.

That includes his armor, his father's sword, his spear, his shield, some rations, a waterskin, and his horse, Grimfola (although Grimfola is more of a companion than a belonging).

I might do a bit of editing tomorrow because it's late now and my brain isn't operating at 100% efficiency, but what I have there sounds pretty much exactly like the idea that I first thought of. []

Wait a second...my brain's never operating at 100% efficiency! []

You know, we're now up to 3 horses plus the people! I didn't expect that, but I suppose that is part of the fun of putting different people's ideas together.

Later I should update First post with the profiles so far.

The challenge has been taken!
I wanted someone to play Gandalf, and Orofacion of the Vanyar has offered to do so.
I think the company should get established before they actually meet him, but it is good to know that we've got someone for the part.
